Who are Bharat Ratnas????......Bollywood stars or Cricketers
Indeed this award can be conferred to a sportsman or a film star, but we need to access the other side of his/her image; what they have done for the people of India, apart from entertainment. Do they have opened hospitals and educational-institutions for poor and shirtless of millions of Indians or they are helping the street-children of India to become a dignified citizen. In a nut-shell this award should be conferred to a “bright star” that not only shines but remove the darkness around it. How many bollywoodstar and cricketers of this country are spending their crores of earnings and valuable time for the neglected people of our society? I think, if all the best people of India can wake-up definitely we can drag the people lagging behind us. Film stars of India only perches on the screen or during the promotion of their film. And cricketers make money to open world class hotels, restaurant,cricket-academy and of course to become more glamorous by collaborating withbollywood-queens.
India has done a big mistake by conferring this award to V. V Giri and MG Ramachandran. I think we should not do this mistake again. The question is, to whom India should confer with this award. What are the criteria? In my opinion, this award specially should be conferred to a personality who has contributed immensely to give a new dimension to Indian public. Any body can be conferred with this award as long as they influence people of India by their commitment and selfless service. Intact, we can give this award to people from International arena, as long as they have a big impact on Indian society. I had a look on the list of the awardees. I think many of them are not even eligible for a state award. It is only because of their political power or because of their pre-recognition they are awarded with this honour.
It is really strange that all of us are looted by the media hype. When we see some one again and again on the TV screen or news paper; they are much celebrated people for us and our hero. Why can’t we give this award to some one who has the potential but not recognized by the media and Indian public. In this context, some one who comes to my mind is a “Nobel Class" scientist” late Prof G.N. Ramachandran, (1922-2001). Today Prof. Ramachandran is highly regarded for his discovery of the structure of collagen and Ramachandran plot. Why the Indian govt. did n’t conferred him with this award? I believe that there are many “Ratnas” among with us. The time has come to recognize them. The nominees for this award should be chosen by Institutions, former awardees and of course by the state governments. The centre should appoint an independent panel to access; but must not play politics with it.
If we don’t find a suitable candidate….we should wait for a hero!!!!!
